In the 1980s, museums influenced by the New Museology and began to change the way they conveyed the context information of the exhibits to the wider public. There was a shift in the museology concept towards considering that the context of a cultural artefact was more important than the item itself. By means of innovative methods and tools and by taking advantage of the WWW potential as an information source, virtual museums were created. They have made the content and context of museum collections more accessible and attractive to the wide public and have enriched the museum experience. There is no official figure yet for the number of virtual museums presently existing worldwide but we know that there are thousands of them and that their number is rapidly on the increase [18]. This article will present the results of a survey on the current state-of-the-art in virtual museums. The purpose behind this is threefold:
