This chapter takes and broad perspective in order to help you more fully grasp the issue of gender and leadership. First, through an examination of demographic trends in leadership positions, we examine the progress women have made in assuming leadership roles. Second, we take a look at two barriers to women’s progress in assuming leadership roles: the glass ceiling and sex-role and managerial stereotypes. Third, we explore the impact of feminist approaches to leadership on our knowledge of gender differences in leadership. Fourth, we review the evidence for gender differences in leadership styles and describe the underlying reasons for these differences. We conclude with an integrative model that proposes some new ways of looking at the issue of gender and leadership.
