The outbreak of the War of Greater East Asia on 8 December, 1941, was merged into the
Second World War and was followed by the conclusion of Thailand's alliance with Japan and
declaration of war against the US and Great Britain on January 25, 1942. Free Thai Movements were
then organised in the US and Great Britain for the purpose of liberating Thailand from the Japanese.
Towards the end of World War II in 1945, Field Marshal Phibul's government resigned, due to a defeat in
the National Assembly, and Kuang Abhaiwong became the Prime Minister. In the following year, King
Rama VIII returned from Switzerland and Dr. Pridi Banomyong became Prime Minister in 1946. The King
presented the new constitunon to the Thai people on 9 May, 1946, the constitution having been drafted
for a long time.
