however, in conceptual level, and the feasibility of the new transit in terms of economic and
financial aspect has remained unstudied. Here, we define new transit as a transportation
mode which has automatic guiding system with independent routes. If the import of a new
transit system proves to be appropriate, there still exist many kinds of new transit systems,
whose advantages and disadvantages are left not compared. Therefore, this study is intended
to provide feasibility proof of the new transit system within the whole demand management
aspect, and to figure out if it has an effect on converting the demand for the road to the new
transit. It also estimates the cost of construction and operation, and compares the feasibility
and sensitivity of four new transit systems, monorail, magnetic levitation(ML), downtown
people mover(DPM), and personal rapid transit(PRT). These four systems are selected
considering the topographic condition and adaptability to the existing system of the site.
This paper is reorganized based on the comprehensive project “New Transit Introduction to
Seoul – Master Plan and Feasibility Study (Seoul, 2000.2),” which examines the propriety of
introducing a new transit system to Seoul, performed through a whole year, 2000. Starting
from the area analysis, the whole project deals with, route and system decision, demand
forecast, feasibility examination, possibility of private investment, social & environmental
impacts, and until facility master plan. Unlike the project, this paper focuses on the two
questions; if the new transit has an effect on alleviating road congestion in Kangnam-gu, and
which system is most appropriate to apply in terms of economic and financial sustainability.
