From the perspective of the owner or manager of land or water where adventure tours take place, adventure tourism management has a somewhat diferent meaning, namely, controlling which paticular adventure tourism enterprises should operate there, what products they can offer, what precautions they must take and guarantees they must provide, and where exactly they can and cannot go.At a broader scale still, local and regional government planning agencies may need to take into accountthe effects of adventure tourism on large-scale changes in land use patterns, property market and subdivisions, infrastructure requirements, and community composition and concerns.Although the primary focus of this volume is on the commercail adventure tourism sector, tour operater need to be aware of these broader-scale issues. In many cases, operators may need to negotiate with landowners, land management agencies, and planning bodies in order to gain permission to carry out a particular commercial activity in a preferred area. This chapter, therefore, examines adventure tourism management from these alternative perspectives.
