The maternal and neonatal complications of UTI
during pregnancy can be devastating. Thirty percent of
patients with untreated asymptomatic bacteriuria
develop symptomatic cystitis and up to 50 percent
develop pyelonephritis. Asymptomatic bacteriuria is
also associated with intrauterine growth retardation
and low-birth-weight infants. All pregnant women
should be screened for bacteriuria and acute cystitis
and pyelonephritis should be aggressively treated with
appropriate therapy together with healthy life style
activities..
