The present hybridization experiments demonstrated the experimental feasibility of producing and rearing until adult size both the reciprocal intergeneric diploid hybrids and triploid hybrid between gilthead seabream (S. aurata)and red seabream (Pagrus major).
Gonadal development was markedly impaired in both reciprocal and triploid hybrids. The adults were clearly immatyre and had only vestigial, sterile gonads. Similary and sterile gonade in adult fish have been reported other intergeneric hybrids and triploid and triploids within sparidea .taking into account unsuccessful pairing of the homologous chromosomes in hybrids that sterility is complete in hybrids resulting from systematically distinct species.as we previously reported, despited, despite the fact that S.aurata and P.major have an identical diploid (2n=48) number of chromosome, there are substantial differences in the morphology of their chromosome sets
