The aim of this article is to provide a selective review of some of the concepts and approaches that have been employed in, and findings from, social and cultural research on museum visiting that might be of use in exhibition design. The field of museum visitor research is not well coordinated, largely because it spans so many disciplines. In terms of empirical research, the main disciplines that have made a contribution are social psychology, sociology, architectural studies and anthropology. A number of other fields also have much to contribute in terms of concepts and analytical approaches, especially art history, cultural, media and literary studies, linguistics and STS (Science and Technology Studies). To review all of these areas is well beyond the scope of this article. Instead, I select a number of themes that much theoretical and empirical research has
highlighted as being of particular importance to understanding museum reception.
