As with in-role behavior decotiss and summer 1987 the organization message about what is desirable or expected might also moderate links between commitment and extra-role behavior this point was illustrated in a study by schaubroeck and ganster 1991 who examined the willingness of student member in 21 volunteer organizations to engage in an extra-role behavior telephone fund-raising on behalf of their organization approximately half the students belonged to service organizations schaubroeck and ganster predicted and found that the relation between members affective commitment to their organization and their willingness to do the round-raising was moderated by the purpose of the organizations in serveice organization affective commitment and participation in the fund-raising were positively related in the nonservice organizations the two variable were unrelated
