My name is Joe Dooley and this may be my last day on earth, no, don’t mind me, I’m just being melodramatic, it’s just that Boss called me in today and I can’t really say how frightened I am, I think he’s give me “the ax”, I’ve been working as a field agent for the I.C.S. for like 20 years now, I have been many people and I’ve gone many places. I still look quite fit for 48 but truth be told I’m getting kind of slow, I really need a vacation but if they indeed fire me, I won’t be able to afford shit, the best part is that is almost Christmas, I couldn’t think of a better gift.
Daniel Ritter, the guard is a good friend of mine, we’ve started working here at the same time, we have lunch together everyday so when I saw the look of concern on his face I couldn’t help but get even more worried.
“I’ve been hearing things the whole morning Joe, it seems like you’re really getting it, I’m sorry”.
“The Ax” that’s what they called it, the ultimate sanction, nobody really knew what was it all about but we were all afraid of it, mostly because all the people who had got it, have never been seen again, their whole lives, erased, their names, houses, families, like they never existed.
I got inside Boss’ office, he greeted me with a sinister grin, the man was quite handsome if I say so myself but he had this weird look on his face like he was cartoonishly evil. He asked me to sit on a chair that was in front of his desk, he turned his back on me, looking at the window, I’m not sure way, the blinds were closed. I felt an injection on the back of my neck and I fell asleep.
When I opened my eyes I was in one of those handcuff tables like the ones you see in old-school spy films with the dangerous laser that rarely gets to slice someone in two or whatever it is it’s supposed to do, my whole body was in pain but it was bearable.
“What’s wrong Dooley?, I see so much fear in your eyes, it’s like you don’t understood what’s about to happen to you, You’re getting ‘the ax’ man!, You’re retiring!, you had probably heard lots and lots of thing about it, and I can tell you for sure none of them are true, because there’s no way you could’ve met somebody after they had got it and even if you had, they can’t say anything, they just can’t, for real, it’s impossible”, he said laughing again, his laugh was pretty twisted and I was terrified, I was really terrified.
