As time passed, people came together to form communities, communities come together to form societies and societies formed civilizations with their own art, religions, customs and cultures. For example, take a look at the Egyptians who lived about 5000 years ago in northern Africa along the banks of the Nile River. The Egyptians are famous for their beautiful pictures carved or painted on stone and some that were painted on the paper! The materials came from the land around them such as the stones from the riverbanks and the paper made from the papyrus plants, a reed that grew near the river. At the first, they use this paper to paint using a brush then later it was used with a type of pen to write their picture messages. The Egyptian picture language is called hieroglyphics (show a picture of hieroglyphics).
