MONITORING AND LABELING OF GMO The use of the biotechnological processes, particularly genetic modification, is extremely important in devising new ways to increase food production, improve nutrient content and better processing or storage characteristics. that when new foods or components are developed using biotechnology, there are both national legal requirements and consumer expectations for effective systems and procedures to assess the the food component for consumption. The advantages and potential risks arising from the application of genetic engineering in the production of foods and feeds have been the subjects of many controversial discussion(Robinson, 2001). Public skepticism has resulted in the implementation of regulatory frameworks that requires the monitoring and labeling of genetically modified organisms(GMOs). GMO labeling allows consumers to choose products according to their ethical, religious, cultural and dietary preferences. Many consumers, citing religious and ethical convictions, prefer not to use the products created by transferring genetic material across species boundaries(Akhter,2001)
