Thaksin cited many books in his speeches and weekly radio broadcasts. But among these, only De Soto and Greenfeld address large themes of economy, society, and historical change. The other books were about management theory and futurism. Both De Soto and Greenfeld offered keys which unlock the magic of economic growth. Greenfeld may also have hinted how the antagonism to the outside world sparked by the crisis might be channeled into a more sustained economic nationalism. She argues that in countries like Germany and Japan, leaders were able to persuade people to sacrifice rights, freedoms, personal goals, and immediate needs for the goal of an economically powerful nation. But Greenfeld also warned that such economic nationalism could be derailed if people prioritized other agendas. The new civil society of 1990s Thailand had done just that.
