Leek, Caffo, and Peng have developed software tools (see swirl, http://swirlstats.com) to address the pacing challenge by
allowing students to learn certain technical material at their own speed.
The R package—swirl—aims to teach users statistics and R simultaneously and interactively.
It attempts to create an authentic learning environment by guiding users through interactive lessons directly within the R console.
The software presents a choice of course lessons and interactively tutors a user through them.
