Current Immigration Policy. Today, roughly 1 million people per year are admitted legally
to the United States as "lawful permanent resident" (persons who have relatives who are
U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents, or who have needed job skills); or as "refugees,"
or "asylees" (persons with "a well-founded fear of persecution" in their country of origin).In
addition, more than 33 million people are awarded visas each year to enter the United States
for study, pleasure, or business. Federal law recognizes the following categories of non citizens
