The Bony FISHES
The bony fishes are divided into two lineages, the sub classes Actinopterygii and Sarcoptergii, These are distinguished readily by their fins – actinopterygians have ‘ray fins’ which are supported by a series of narrow cartilaginous or body rods called radials, while sarcopterygians have fleshy ‘lods fins’ supported by a single basal bone and with muscles that can modify the posture of the fin.
