Breeding system
The usual breeding tests were performed (Dafni et al.,2005): agamospermy treatment, assessment of spontaneous self-pollination, cross-pollination, open pollination in emasculatedflowers (anthers removed artificially) and open pollination (con-trol). Per treatment and season (dry and wet) 30 flowers wereused. The weight of the seeds derived from self and cross-pollinationin both seasons was estimated by weighing 200 seeds. The seedsize (greatest length) was measured with a digital caliper (N = 30per treatment). Seeds were germinated in transparent plastic boxesunder paper moistened with distilled water, maintained at roomtemperature and light (N = 120 seeds per treatment). The germina-tion speed (GS) for each treatment was calculated as proposed byVieira and Carvalho (1994).Previous observations showed the occurrence of spontaneousself-pollination in pre-anthesis flowers. To confirm the possibilitythat fruiting results from this early selfing, flowers in pre-anthesiswere manually selfed and cross-pollinated. Thirty buds per season(dry and wet) and treatment were used.
