Although xerostomia often is a manifestation of
impaired salivary gland function, it can occur with or
without a noticeable decrease in saliva production. In
most circumstances, xerostomia is accompanied by
SGH, which reflects an objective, measurable decrease in
salivary flow (hyposalivation). Symptoms of dry mouth
may range from mild oral discomfort to significant oral
disease that can compromise patients’ health, dietary
intake and quality of life.2
