If we could have any wish, we would live happily ever after, wouldn't we? Not according to the stories about wisher. In story after story , humans who are done in by their own greed or foolishness. Consider these three famous stories.
A poor woman gave the last piece of food she had to an old lady. The old lady, who had special powers, rewarded the poor woman with three wishes. Being hungry, the woman wished for a sausage for dinner. When her husband came home and found out what happened, he was angry that she had wasted a wish. In his anger, he said,''I wish that sausage was on your nose''. Needless to say, they had to use the third wish to get the sausage off her nose.
A fisherman caught a fish. It was an enchanted prince who asked to be thrown back in the sea. When the fisherman told his wife what happened, she was furious. ''If you had wished for a nice cottage, ''she said,''the fish would have granted the wish. Than we wouldn't have to live in this miserable litter hut''. So the fisherman went back to the sea. He wished for a cottage, but his wife wasn't happy with the cottage or with the castle that came next. She wished to be king and then to be emperor. Finally she wished to be like God. When the fisherman went home after
making this last wish, he found his wife in the miserable little hut.
When King Midas was given one wish, he wished that anything he touched would turn to gold. He touched a branch, a stone, and an apple. They all turned to gold, and King Midas was happy. He went home to eat but could not eat. All his food turned to gold.
