One would think that by the year 2005 an article concerning recent developments in the restaurant in dustry regarding
discrimination to wards customers would be a rather short endeavour. After all, have we not progressed greatly as a
people since the signing into law of the 1964 Civil Rights Act,and more recently the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? Despite thousands of court rulings since the latter 1960’s affirming the obligations of all businesses to treat customers equally regardless of race, sex, colour, age, or religion, many restaurants continue to discriminate. Like wise,
Title III of the ADA, which clearly states that all businesses open to the public must make reasonable accommodations for disabled patrons, has not slowed numerous restaurants from regularly discriminating against those with disabilities. While the laws and courts continue to chip away at the is sue of restaurateurs discriminating against certain types of customers, more must be done as evidenced by the number of recent cases of discrimination.Truly, the only sure way to stop the
discrimination from happening in restaurants is for restaurant management to embrace anti discriminatory practices and thor oughly train their employees to provide consistent service to all customers.
