The approach of using autoxidation of unsaturated group on a polymer as a basis for oxygen scavenging has been take up by Chevron Chemical Company, with a further development of the Cryovac concept. In this case the oxidizable moity is a cyclohexene side group bound to the backbone, for instance by transesterification (Ching et al., 1994). The novelty of this process lies in its apparent “tasteless” achievement of oxygen removal. The earlier approaches involving autoxidation of non-cyclic side group are claimed to have imparted some taste to the food.
