Two types of conservatism developed with diametrically opposing results. The churches of the East and Egypt were determined to retain the unity of initiation and have done so to the present day by allowing a presbyter to anoint immediately after baptism with chrism already blessed by the bishop. Thus candidates, usually babies, are baptized, sealed, and communicated at one occasion. This unity has intrigued many churches of the West in recent years and some have endeavored to make initiation complete in one service at whatever age.
