First, due to concerns about plasmid stability under natural environmental conditions, bacterial strains used in ecological studies should be chromosomally marked with a single copy of the Green fluorescent protein gene to maximize genetic stability as well as reduce the risk of transfer of the genetic marker to other microorganisms (Fig. 2).
