Larger organizations often have many IT implementation projects going on simultaneously—a number of which could be electronic commerce implementations or updates. Some chief information officers ( ClOs ) of larger companies now use a portfolio approach to managing these multiple projects. Project portfolio management is a technique in which each project is monitored as if it were an investment in a financial portfolio. The CIO records the projects in a list (usually using spreadsheet or database management software) and updates the list regularly with current information about each projects status.
