Mae Mo Mine is a lignite Mine belongs to the Royal Forest Department, covering around 8,000 acres space. This approximately 40-million-years old, this lignite was discovered in 1917 with an amount of 630 million tonnes of lignite that could be used for approximately another 50 years. The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has opened power plants here and allows visitors to visit a small park with a panoramic view of the mine from the top. There also are Lignite Coal Mine Study Center Museum (Mae Moh Mine) that welcomes visitors to learn about the mine geological, including the mine’s history and electricity production technology. The area to the east of the mine is a vast field of Mexican sunflowers which bloom around November to December creates the scenic view of sunflowers field.
