Bird responses over 1 to 21, 22 to 43, and 1 to 43 d in
feed intake, weight gain, and feed conversion to
decreasing CP are shown in Table 2. Over the first 3 wk,
there were no significant differences between treatments
in feed intake and weight gain but the feed:gain ratio
increased with a reduction in CP. However, there were
no significant differences in feed conversion between the
Medium and High treatments but rather between High
and Low, and Medium and Low treatments. Although
there were no significant differences in feed intake
between treatments from 1 and 21 d of age, the response
does show a trend for intake to increase as CP of the
diet decreases. This result can be explained by comparing
the levels of amino acids in the three starter-period
diets. Although the Low protein treatment was formu-
