People on Ko Kret
The majority of Ko Kret’s population is split almost equally between ethnic Thaisn and those of Mon descent. It is hard to separate the two ethnic groups because of the cultural and racial amalgamation that has occurred over the course of two centuries. However, an observant visitor can tell them apart by the orientation of their homes, and their traditions and the rites. Thais make up about 42 percent of the local population. Most of them live in the north, south and west of the island, in the villages numbered 2 to 5. The Mon people of Ko Kret make up about 43 percent. Mostof them live in the villages numbered 1, 6 and 7 which together make up the largest community in Nonthaburi province. The ethnic Mon carry the traditions of their ancestors. They worship the household guardian spirits of their paternal family. The Mon language is still taught at some temples. Outside the temple walls; however, the language is spoken by only a handful of elderly people.
