Passenger train derails in India, carriage seen dangling off bridge
HUNDREDS of passengers have escaped with their lives after a train derailed on a bridge and dangled precariously close to a river on Saturday.
Five coaches and the engine of the 55753 UP Sifung train were damaged in Kokrajhar, which lies along the bank of Gourang River in India, after it reportedly hit a tree that had fallen onto the tracks in front of the bridge, Ruptly reports.
The tree was uprooted after a storm in the early hours of the morning on Saturday, just hours before the train hit at approximately 5:15am.
Footage reveals the twisted wreck dangling above the Champamati river.
The driver, his assistant and several passengers sustained injuries. No one was critically hurt.
An investigation into the precise causes of the derailment has been launched.
It is believed the train was travelling at a slow speed before the crash, preventing the number of fatalities.
