The importance of social support in diabetes self-management is reflected in empirical literature. In a descriptive study of 200 rural African American individuals living with diabetes, increased levels of support for diabetes self-management were associated with a higher frequency of glucose testing (Brody et al., 2008). Individuals living with diabetes require teaching regarding the skill of blood glucose monitoring and how to interpret results and problem solve to adjust behaviors based on their results (AADE, 2010).
