This presentation discusses teacher requirements for improving assessment for teaching and learning.It argues that teachers need to have a clear understanding of fundamental assessment concepts and principles (e.g., reliability, validity and error). Teachers must also be aware of the purposes and aims of both standardized assessment tools and assessment tools that have been locally created. More importantly teachers should know how to interpret assessment results, how to report assessment results, and how to base instructional decisions and future teaching on assessments. The approaches suggested in this presentation are based on many years of work in the development of standardized assessment tools and teaching students, experienced teachers, and other educators about assessment for teaching and learning, as detailed in our recent BOOK An introduction to educational assessment, measurement, and evaluation (Brown, Irving and Keegan, 2014)
