The realization that diabetes mellitus is a “metabolic
curse” should be a trigger for desire to seek
understanding of the biochemical and molecular basis
of this metabolic disorder. Such an understanding will
inform efforts to elucidate more effective management
interventions against diabetes mellitus. In this regard,
more efficacious synthetic insulin with rapid actions,
ability to traverse all body compartments, less adverse
effects as well as longer durations of actions need to be
designed. The oral hypoglycemic agents, which are
apparently bedeviled by side effects, need to be
optimized to mitigate these demerits. Lifestyle
management needs to be optimized to achieve the
intended goal of lowering the glycemic index in
diabetics
