Consumers have taken increasing control over their travel arrangements since 2001, by moving away from the use of travel agency consultants towards on-line reservations and “dynamic packaging” (sites which allow consumers to build and book their own holidays). The e-travel revolution was initially triggered by two key events: the arrival of low-cost carriers (LCCs), which encouraged travellers to book direct via their websites; and the fall-off of travel after 9/11, which caused the travel industry to turn to the Internet as a clearing house for overcapacity. The development of on-line travel agencies (OTAs), such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz, meant that consumers were able to compare prices of many different airlines and hotels side-by-side and find the best deals
