Antibiotics in Meat Soaring Worldwide
According to a new study published in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" Thursday, antibiotic use in pork, beat and poultry is on the rise.
Pig farmers are meeting demand by using about four times as much antibiotics per pound of meat as cattle ranchers. Poultry is a close second. In 2010, about 63,000 tons of antibiotics were injected into cows, chickens and pigs worldwide.
"We have huge amounts of antibiotic use in the animal sector around the world, and it´s set to take off in a major way in the next two decades," says study author Ramanan Laxminarayan.
