04/26/2005: In a classic case of cold feet, Jennifer Carol Wilbanks fled her home in Duluth, Georgia four days before her wedding to fiancé John Mason, triggering a media-frenzied nationwide search. Having made it all the way to Albuquerque, New Mexico, Wilbanks finally called her beau and told him she's been kidnapped by a Hispanic man and his blonde girlfriend. In a police report the runaway bride claimed she'd been sexually assaulted by the pair, but finally admitted that she'd made the whole story up. Wilbanks was sentenced to two years' probation and 120 hours of community service for making false statements, while her ex-fiancé settled down with another woman.
