The greater LAI in high density banana intercrops led to an increase in
fractional light interception and ground cover, which would be useful to farmers in
intercultivation practices as it may reduce weed growth (Jama et al., 1991) and the
need for a cover crop. Increased ground cover is also likely to decrease soil erosion
(Meyer & Harmon 1992) thereby protecting the long term sustainability of farm
lands.
