Thermotolerance is a key trait of microalgae for growth in tropical
climates, particularly when utilising photobioreactors. Tropical
zones are better locations for microalgal cultivation compared to
temperate areas because they possess a longer duration of daylight
and more stable seasonal temperatures throughout the course of
the year (Franz, Lehr, Posten, & Schaub, 2012). Microalgal cultivation
using closed photobioreactors has many advantages over the
open pond systems including higher yields, decreased levels of
contamination, less land demand and deceased water loss via
evaporation. However, this type of microalgal cultivation in tropical
zones faces significant challenges from high light intensities
and high temperatures in the culture medium that can damage
microalgal cells. It is common for the temperature in photobioreactors
to exceed 45 C for a few hours during a day under tropical
conditions (Pan, Wang, Chuang, Chang, & Chen, 2011). High light
intensity on microalgal cultures can be lowered inexpensively by
use of shading nets, but the cost to artificially regulate temperature
is significantly higher. Therefore, a feasible solution to these problems
is to isolate thermotolerant microalgae that can synthesise
pigments in tropical conditions.
