A final premise of this book relates to positive behavior support and deals
with empowering the student and demonstrating respect for individual preferences.
Students, despite difficulties with communication, must be listened to
and must be supported in their efforts to become self-determined. Helping students
experience the world to develop their interests is a critical aspect of selfdetermination
so that students can advocate for what they desire. Instead of
forcing students to learn the same material in the same way, respecting the individual
student’s unique interests and strengths can encourage a greater partnership
in learning between teacher and student.
