Biologic TherapiesSignificant advances in RA treatment have occurred in the past 10–15 years. These newer therapies belong to a group of drugs called biologic response modifiers and have been shown to help slow progression of RA when all other treatments have failed to do so.[2,4] Biologics are genetically engineered proteins that have the ability to target key proteins or cytokines involved in the inflammatory cascade, including TNF-a and interleukin-1.[2] They are especially beneficial for patients whose disease does not respond to traditional DMARDs. Approximately 30% of patients will not respond adequately to the first biologic agent used to treat their RA, but those that do can expect to see an improvement in their symptoms within 12 weeks of initiation of therapy.[7] Patients whose response to their current treatment is considered inadequate should consider alternative treatment options, such as switching to another drug, adding additional therapies, or increasing the dose or frequency of medications.[2]
