The AT point was primarily determined using the V-slope
method [5] in addition to the following conventional criteria [6,7]:
(1) ˙VE/˙VO2 increases after registering as flat or decreasing, whereas
˙V
E/˙VCO2 remains constant or decreases, and (2) R versus exercise
time, which was flat or slowly increasing, begins to increase
more sharply. Or, (3) FETO2 increases after registering as flat or
decreasing, whereas FETCO2 remains constant or decreases. AT was
expressed in ˙VO2 , and usually divided by body weight (ml/min/kg).
The respiratory compensation point (RC) was determined by the
following criteria. (1) ˙VE/˙VCO2 increasing after registering as flat or
decreasing, and (2) FETCO2 decreasing after registering as flat or
increasing above the AT point.
Peak ˙VO2 was defined as the average value obtained during the
last 30 s of incremental exercise. When R was less than 1.0 at peak
exercise, the test was considered incomplete because of the subject’s
poor effort and the data at peak exercise were not used in the
statistics.
