The key question I am asking with my work is: what is it about women artists who make work about women, and therefore tell a different, more complex story? Marina Ambramovic, Tracy Emin, Kara Walker, and Catherine Opie are examples of contemporary women artists whose work we recognize, but whose portraits we would not. Women outnumber men in higher education in most fields, however in the art world, the number of solo shows given to men is still much greater than those given to women. We might have expected greater progress in the 40 years since Linda Nochlin wrote “Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists?” Even the monetary value of men’s work compared to women’s work is higher. Is there a fundamental issue with how women’s artwork is received? I am focusing on representations of accomplished women because I don’t see what I want to see.
