Chloroform extraction of olive samples was used to
determine chlorophyll-bound magnesium. Özdemir and
Güçer reported that carbon tetrachloride and chloroform
extracts included uncharged species and those with covalenty
bound metal. They showed that chloroform extract
spectra were similar to a chlorophyll spectrum [11]. A definite
amount (5.0 g) of olive sample was weighed, 25.0 ml
of CHCl3 was added, and shaken for 2 h at 25 ◦C. The
final solution magnesium content was determined by AAS
with electrothermal atomisation in a graphite furnace. This
fraction was not completely soluble in MIBK after evaporation
of chloroform, so that magnesium was determined
by ET-AAS. The chlorophyll-bound magnesium was calculated
by subtracting the amount of magnesium in the
chloroform extract from that in the carbon tetrachloride
extract
