piglets. Theaimoftheexperimentwastoassessthebehaviourofpigletsduringthe
sucklingperiodaswellastoassesstheirperformanceandmortalityrateuptoweaning
in litterswithdifferentcompositioninterms ofadoptedandbiologicalpiglets.Three
treatmentswerestudied:100B(100%biologicalpiglets, n¼13),50B50A(50%biological
pigletsand50%adoptedpiglets, n¼13)and100A(100%adoptedpiglets, n¼13).Alllitters
were standardisedtoelevenpigletsonaveragewithin20.170.4 h(14.3–24.7h)ofbirth.
The behaviourofpigletswasrecordedduringfourconsecutivesucklingsforfourdays(days
1, 2,4and6afterfarrowing,consideringday1asthecross-fosteringday).Theobservations
were performedattwotimeperiods:TP1(fromreleaseofpigletsoutofcreepboxuntil
milkletdown)andTP2(fromtheendofmilkletdownupto15minlater).Pigletswere
weighed atdays1,4,7,10,13and16.Therewerenodifferences(P40.05) amongthe
treatmentsinthefollowingbehaviouralvariables:percentageofmissednursingepisodes;
numberoffightsforteatsandpercentageofpigletsinvolvedinfightsatTP1;percentageof
piglets vocalisingatTP1andatTP2;numberoffightsperpigletelsewhereinthecageand
percentageofpigletsinvolvedinthesefights;numberofinstancesofplayfulbehaviourper
pigletandpercentageofpigletsinvolvedinit.AtTP2ofday1,100Bpigletsdisplayeda
lowernumber(Po0.05) offightsforteat(0.9vs.1.6vs.1.4for100B,100Aand50B50A,
respectively)andtendedtohavealowerpercentage(Po0.07)ofpigletsinvolvedinthese
fightsthan100A(49.6%,67.2%and64.9%for100B,100Aand50B50A,respectively).
Nutritive nursingepisodes(overallmediansof4.0,3.0,4.0and4.0fordays1,2,4and6,
respectively),survivalrate(overall97.2%)andaverageweightofpiglets(1983g,2650g,
3411g,4207gand5047gfordays4,7,10,13and16,respectively)weresimilar(P40.05)
amongtreatments.Cross-fosteringperformedonaverageat20hafterbirthhasnoadverse
effectsonsurvivalandgrowthperformanceofadoptedpiglets.
