Four intact freshmen government classes, in a large suburan Atlanta school, were used in this six week study. Although intact classes were used, assignment of classes to either treatment or control was determined by the rollof a die. Two classes were assigned to treatment and two to control. Each Monday all four classes received study guides that were based on the text and were given a period to cover the material. The control classes would have lectures, filmstrips or class discussions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, while Fridays were used for either teacher guided reviews or their biweekly test. Although the treatment classes received the study guides each Monday, they only had lectures, filmstrips or discussion on Tuesday or Wednesday. Having been divided into teams of four, theTGT classes reviewed the week's materials as teams each Thursday and competed in academic tournaments on Friday. The tournaments were held on Thursday when the biweekly test was given.
