This study has described a previously unreported
domain of clinical practice; RNs patient bed-bath
practice in the ICU. We have identified differences
in process and products used in patient hygiene
practices in four ICUs highlighting that practice was
varied, relied on custom or firmly held individual
beliefs and on the whole was not evidence based.
Intensive care nurses are in an optimum position to
influence change and to promote evidence-based
care for the promotion of healthy skin integrity in
the critically ill patient, thus reclaiming ownership
of core nursing care.
