3. Results and discussion
3.1. Biogas production at different I/S ratios
3.1.1. Biogas production from TPM, CM and BS alone
Fig. 1 shows the cumulative biogas production and methane content in the headspace of reactors during the AD of CM, TPM and BS alone at different I/S ratios. Biogas in all reactors could be produced immediately from the first day and increased obviously during the first 35 days, then decreased at the higher I/S ratio or ceased at lower I/S ratio. The highest biogas production, highest daily biogas production and highest methane content in the head space of reactor all increased with an increase in I/S ratio (Fig. 1). These results suggested that high I/S ratio (>2) was favorable to the biogas production from individual CM, TPM and BS. Since the amount of feedstock (as VS) at the start of all treatments was equal, higher I/S ratio treatments inevitably contained more inoculum, which not only could provide active methanogenesis, but also serve as a source of nutrients, like various trace-metals, nitrogen and organic materials [17]. More inoculums
