Elementary teachers are the beginning of the Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) pipeline. To develop the gifts and talents of friture STEM innovators, elementary classrooms should provide rich, inquiry-based science insfruction (National Science Board, 2010). Unfortunately, research suggests that science is virtually ignored in the elementary grades. Fulp (2002) reported that Grade K-5 teachers spent only an average of 25 minutes on science instruction each day.
