Match performance was also determined using subjective ratings from the head coach of the participating club. The head coach assessed player performance using a 1–3 ratings scale (poor, average, good). This approach, considered as the gold standard measure of match performance, considers whether tactical, coach and team performance objectives were achieved by each player. However, these ratings have the potential to be influenced by coaches’ bias and emotions, with coaches’ recalling prominent performance displays more clearly than less obvious actions. Coach’s ratings were undertaken independent of all other analysis and data.
