In a statement, Aiken Promotions said: "The One Direction show tonight has been cancelled as Liam has taken ill, and whilst not serious , he is unable to perform tonight. Please hold on to your tickets.

"A further statement will be made in the morning.

The company behind the Portaferry Hotel insisted tonight they are trying to help a bride facing wedding chaos after the 300-year-old hostelry closed down.

Leonie Kelly was due to have her reception at the well known hotel on the shores of Strangford Lough on Friday. But she has now been told the 120-guest reception has been cancelled as the hotel is closed.

James Sinton, Director of property landlord at Beannchor, said: “When we discovered that a wedding was booked in the hotel for Friday, we took steps to assist the bride and groom with finding an alternative venue.

“I spoke with the mother of the bride on several occasions yesterday to try and find a solution for their wedding reception, also ensuring they were not out of pocket. We are under no legal obligation to do this but given the tight timescales, we wanted to do everything we could to help during what I am sure is a very stressful time for the couple.”

Beannchor does not own the Portaferry Hotel, but leases it to tenants who they say have full responsibility for its operation. The McAleese family who run the hotel have blamed the closure of the Exploris visitor centre in the village.

Mr Sinton added: “Regrettably our tenants in The Portaferry Hotel notified us by email late on Sunday evening of their intention to cease trading the with immediate effect.”

He said the company are “still working to ascertain the full scope of the situation”, but added that they “deeply regret that the hotel has had to close but these circumstances are beyond our control” and that the “tenant has full operational responsibility for the running of the business, to include responsibility for guests and employees”.

The statement concluded: “We are a significant employer in the hospitality sector in Northern Ireland and we take our responsibilities very seriously.

“The closure of Exploris I’ve no doubt has had a negative impact on trading at the hotel and in the town of Portaferry and our company has been working with Friends of Exploris Trust to ensure a future for the aquarium.

“And we are also committed to working with the tenant to resolve these current issues at hotel in order to ensure its speedy reopening.”
