TRANSFER MEDIUMS 27
Transfer Mediums
You’ll use three key mediums to transfer your images from the transfer film to the
new surface. The first one, believe it or not, is simply alcohol gel (or hand sani-
tizer) and is a popular transfer medium as it’s very easy to use. Make sure you buy
brand-name Purell instant hand sanitizer though—it’s the only one that reliably
works for these processes (Figure 2.13).
The next medium is DASS SuperSauce Concentrate. Use this medium to transfer
images to both porous and nonporous surfaces, and as a final varnish for some of
the transfers. When you apply it as a primer to a nonporous surface and then reac-
tivate it with the SuperSauce Solution, you can make transfers to metal, plastic,
and glazed tile. See Chapter 4 for instructions on how to make SuperSauce Solu-
tion from the concentrate.
The last medium is commercial grade gelatin, a product that lets you transfer your
image to an almost endless variety of surfaces. Details on this medium are covered
extensively in Chapter 10.
Additives
For some of the processes, we’ll be adding other ingredients to the transfer
medium to get different effects. These may change the properties of the mixture,
so don’t ever place any solution containing them into a microwave (Figure 2.14).
