6.1. Animal studies
The results from animal studies presented in Table 2 consistently show the beneficial effects of HS extracts on lowering blood pressure [21], [22], [23] and [52]. Although the same effects on blood pressure occur in normotensive animal models, the positive effects are greater in hypertensive animals [21] and [23]. Aqueous extracts of HS calyxes and petals at doses ranging from 1 mg/kg/day through 1000 mg/kg/day were effective in reducing blood pressure among rodent models [21], [22], [23] and [52] (Table 2). There is evidence that the positive effects are dose dependent at lower doses [21], but not at extremely high doses [23].
